How to make the most of your lessons: Tips from the professionals

  • Practice every day.  Consistency is important for steady progress.
  • Warm-up before lessons, practice sessions, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Stand/sit up straight!  Good posture is the first step towards good technique.
  • Practice in front of a mirror when possible.
  • Listen to music and go to concerts.
  • Play in a group with other musicians.

How to care for your instrument

  • Do not expose your instrument to extreme temperatures.  Many instruments are ruined when left in an attic, hot car, or cold basement.
  • Always store your instrument in its case when transporting it.
  • Invest in a humidity gauge for your practice space.  If the humidity is extreme, buy a humidifier or dehumidifier, or use a dampit.
  • Always set your instrument down on an appropriate stand or in its case.  Never place the instrument on the floor.
  • Wipe your instrument down with a soft cloth after playing.  Wind instruments should be swabbed out after every time they are played.
  • String players:  do not touch your bowhair.  It will become dirty and will not function properly.
  • Ask your teacher about the maintenance required to keep your instrument in top shape.  Most instruments need to be checked by a professional repair person annually.
